Foot in It
What a strange country I live in. I have seen more flags of other countries being waved around and worn by Canadian citizens during the World Cup than Canadian flags on Canada Day.
Do we have that much of a void of national identity that we need to seek out our ancestors to reach the level of fervour?
Or is it just our pathetic attempts at football/soccer that make fans need to look elsewhere for vicarious involvement?
Addedum: Thanks to Say What for this picture - Makes me want to watch a hell of a lot more soccer

I've always been taken aback by both the fervor with which Canadians I talk to defend their country (especially when compared to America) when, at the same time, they seem to have an inferiority complex about it.
Not a judgement. Just something I notice.
Great picture, by the way. :)
It's the world cup dude. People die over this game. People are smashed and trampled on, riots break out.
At least it's only the flags here, lol.
S&C - I've always said we feel superiority inferiority complex - we like to feel superior due to our insignificance
As a fellow Montrealer, I for one celebrated the World Cup (I'm from Italy) with more entusiasm than Canada Day, mostly because I'm ashamed of our dear PM, Mr.Harper...
Nice to see anotehr intelligent Canadian guy with a blog. Makes me miss being in my home country - check mine out if you get a chance fairfromfair.blogspot.com
I've put up a link to your blog - I like it.
Yes, I guess it makes you want to watch more, doesn't it? I believe you don't know what you've been missing all this time...
A piece of advice? Try to see the end game on Sunday and focus your attention on the Italian superb collection of... Sorry, but my English just isn't good enough to reach that far.
Great humour, fine blog! Congratulations!
Forza Italia!! :)
I agree with Tornwordo.. this is the greatest game on earth! (besides im a little biased being italian)
Canada has long and stories tradition of supporting their hockey teams, which are the best in the world despite the dismal Stanley Cup results. But Canada and the rest of the world could learn a lesson from NZ. Ruggers in short shorts are way hotter than any footballer I've seen! ;-)
